I try to talk to my lawyer about it.

My experience:

I tell him everything: the bills, the threats, the hidden money, the stress I’m under on a daily basis. He suggests we go into mediation, as if this was some little fight. I’m angry, because I feel like he doesn’t fully grasp the situation. My ex-partner’s abuse is slipping by unnoticed.

Explanation:

Failure to recognize financial abuse can exacerbate victims’ feelings of injustice and powerlessness. While often involuntary, this invisibilization can slow legal proceedings and erode trust in institutions.

It is crucial to document every time that an abuser refuses to pay (messages, emails, bank statements) and to share them with your lawyer. It’s also important to seek out support from a support worker specialized in intimate partner violence.
