I speak to my lawyer to set up an action plan.

My experience:

My lawyer listens to me. Her advice is clear: I need to prove my stability. That means showing proof that I have a job, appropriate housing, and, if needed, that I’ve sought medical care. Even though I’m the one being targeted by these attacks, I have to justify myself. He’s reversing the roles: he’s now the victim, and I’m at fault. It’s exhausting. It’s unfair.

Explanation:

In cases of post-separation violence, victims are often forced to prove that they are stable and “good mothers.” Meanwhile, abusers use the legal system to erode their psychological health and keep them off-balance. Despite its design, the system can become a tool for control.
