I act like it’s no big deal, hoping that everyone will forget about it eventually.

My experience:

I begin to self-isolate, because, deep down, I’m being eaten alive by shame. It’s been getting harder to leave my house. My loved ones no longer speak to me. Since the photos were sent out, I’ve been having panic attacks and dark thoughts. In the end, I decide to speak with my doctor. He prescribes me anti-anxiety medication and suggests that I go on sick leave from work.

Explanation:

Sexual cyberviolence (revenge porn) can have several psychological effects on victims: post-traumatic stress, depression, isolation, or even the risk of suicide. Even if it feels impossible, breaking the silence is key. Talking about it with someone you trust, a health care professional, an intimate partner violence support worker, or a help line can make all the difference.
